Born and raised in Colorado, Scott had a standout career at Wheat Ridge High School. He was the State Cross Country Champion in 2009 and went on to finish 17th at the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships later that season. He then chose to run collegiately at the University of Portland.
Scott signed with HOKA NAZ Elite in July of 2015. That fall he finished third place at the USATF Club XC Championships. In January he finished third at the Great Edinburgh International XC Challenge. He opened set a huge personal best of 28:00.43 at the Stanford Invitational for 10,000 meters, followed by a runner-up finish at the USATF Half Marathon Championships and a 6th place finish at the Bolder Boulder 10k. At the Olympic Trials he finished 4th place in the 10,000. In the fall of 2016 he finished 2nd at the NYRR Dash to the Finish 5k and 5th in a loaded field at the prestigious Manchester Road Race. The first half of 2017 included an 8th place finish at the USATF Cross Country Championships, a 36th place finish at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and a top American spot at the Bloomsday 12k. In July he was 2nd at the USATF 7 mile Champs and he made his marathon debut in October at the Frankfurt Marathon in 2:12:35. His 2018 began with an eighth-place finish at the USATF Cross Country Championships and a fifth place at the United Airlines NYC Half. He was second at both the USATF 25k Championships in May and the Falmouth Road Race in August. He then finished fourth at the Great North Run, the world’s largest half marathon, in September. He concluded his 2018 with a seventh-place finish at the TCS New York City Marathon in a new personal best of 2:12:28. He began 2019 by finishing sixth at the USATF Cross Country Championships and first at the Gasparilla Half Marathon. In April he smashed his personal best in the marathon with a 2:09:09 at the Boston Marathon, good for seventh place overall (top American).
At the 2020 Olympic Trials Marathon he finished 12th place, in 2:12:39. In the fall of 2020 he ran the 6.1k leg on HOKA NAZ Elite’s winning team at the Michigan Pro Ekiden and was 4th at the Michigan Pro Half Marathon a week later in a PB-tying 1:02:18. In December, he finished 4th at The Marathon Project in 2:09:42, the second sub 2:10 of his career.
Scott had a stellar career at the University of Portland. His cross country prowess was particularly special. In 2012 he was 26th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In 2013 he was 13th. Then, in his senior season, he finished in 12th place and led the Pilots to their first ever podium finish as a team (3rd place). His track bests include a 28:43.70 at 10,000 meters. He also made his debut at the half marathon distance during his senior year, running 1:03:59 and earning a qualifier for the 2016 USA Olympic Trials Marathon.
