Ryan grew up in Hickory North Carolina where he was a high school cross country and track State champion at Hickory High. He was the Foot Locker South Champion in 2006, runner-up in 2007, and finished 11th at the Foot Locker National Championships.
Ryan has been one of the top U.S. athletes at 3,000 and 5,000 meters since graduating from college in 2013. Weeks after his college career ended he notched his first podium at a U.S. Championship, finishing third at the 2013 USATF Outdoor Meet and earning a spot on the U.S. Team at the World Championships. He’d qualify for Worlds again in 2015 by winning the U.S. Championship. He then finished seventh at the World Champs. In 2016, he won the U.S. Championship in the indoor 3,000 meters and then earned a Silver Medal at the World Indoor Championships just one week later. He missed out on an Olympic Team spot later that summer (finishing sixth in the 5,000 meter final at the U.S. Trials), but was back on the World Championship team in 2017. In 2018, he finished second at the U.S. Championships. After an injury-riddled 2019, he came back in 2020 to run 3:38.16 for 1500 meters and 13:15.28 for 5,000 meters.
In his first race as a member of HOKA NAZ Elite, he won a tactical 3,000 at the Valley of the Sun Classic in February of 2021.
At NC State, Ryan excelled at both cross country and track. On the grass, Ryan was the ACC Champion as a senior and a three-time All American including a 12th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships. On the oval, Ryan was a 10-time NCAA All American, a seven-time ACC Champion, and left the Wolfpack with collegiate bests of 3:54.89 for the mile, 7:43.08 for 3,000 meters, and 13:26.34 for 5,000 meters.
